WOUND AWARENESS WEEK
2009
30 MARCH - 5
APRIL ______________________________________________________
THE
ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM CAMPAIGN
The Elephant In The Room is a nationwide
awareness campaign on behalf of The Australian Wound Management
Association (AWMA) that seeks to draw attention to the serious
problem of chronic wounds a condition that affects of 270,000
Australians today.
AWMA is the peak body for wound management
in Australia. It strives to raise awareness, develop knowledge and
encourage best practice in the application of effective wound
management. We are also working with many different groups in the
healthcare profession to develop treatment policy and agitate for
change at a governmental policy making level.
Those suffering from wounds are also
predominately senior citizens. One of the biggest problems is a lack
of awareness and knowledge of the severity and suffering experienced
by chronic wound sufferers. We would ask you to take a moment to
read more on this site, and also to sign the online petition. Your
support is greatly appreciated and does make a difference. If you
would like to help in other ways we would appreciate it if you
mention the Elephant In The Room website to friends and colleagues -
every signature is important.
Wound Awareness Week 2009 - We Need Your
Support!
Healthcare in Australia is world class in
many respects, but access to evidence- based best practice in wound
care is lagging. Many of the over 250,000 Australians with chronic
wounds receive suboptimal care and are not aware of how to access
best practice in wound care. Even if assessed by a health
professional well trained in wound management, they may have to pay
up to several hundred dollars weekly for the wound
products/technology that will best heal their
wound.
The Australian Wound Management Association
is determined to reverse this situation. Our Wound Awareness
Campaign, culminating each year in Wound Awareness Week, is aimed at
raising awareness of the burden of wounds, improving standards of
care and ensuring affordable access to dressings and other wound
technology for all Australians. But, we cannot do this alone- we
need your support. Please go on line to www.elephantintheroom.com.au and sign our petition- and please
raise awareness of this issue with policy makers whenever you can.
We can become world class in wound management
too!
